Saturday’s college hoop
Young, thin Dayton Flyers are 2-2 in Grant’s first season, beating Ball St/Ohio of MAC by 1-14 points, losing to Hofstra/ODU. Dayton is playing #312 pace (very slow), making just 32% of its 3’s while forcing only 14 turnovers/game. Akron has only played two games, winning both at home, by 10-17 points over stiffs. Zips also have new coach; they haven’t played in a week, are shooting 37% outside arc, only 39% inside arc, but it is small sample size. A-14 home favorites are 6-10 vs spread; MAC road underdogs are 5-4.

Davidson scored 95.3 pts/game in its 2-1 start, losing 81-68 at Nevada in its only road game. Wildcats beat Appalachian State 86-74 at home LY, after training by 3 with 12:30 to play. Davidson starts a freshman, two sophs. ASU is 1-3 vs D-I teams, but lost to Iowa St by 6, at JMU in double OT. Mountaineers are forcing 2nd-least %age of turnovers in country, despite playing #39 pace. A-14 favorites are 7-14 vs spread, 1-4 away from home; Sun Belt underdogs are 16-9 vs spread, all away from home. ASU starts two sophomores, two juniors.

Wm & Mary beat Old Dominion last two years, by 11-7 points; these teams used to be CAA rivals before Monarchs jumped leagues because of football. ODU is 4-1 with only one home game- they lost by 11 to Temple on neutral floor, won ay JMU in only true road game. W&M is 1-2 vs D-I foes, beating Hampton by 7 in only home game. Tribe starts three sophs and a junior- they’re making only 30% of 3-pointers so far. C-USA road favorites are 4-1 vs spread; CAA underdogs are 6-16. Monarchs start three juniors, two seniors.

Patrick Ewing’s Georgetown team is 3-0 vs schedule #350, 2nd-easiest in country; Hoyas start three juniors, one senior- they’ve made 44% of their 3’s so far, but they’ve pounded on cruddy teams, so they’re stress-free shots. Richmond is off to an awful 1-4 start, with only win over UAB by 13. Spiders are #337 experience team – they start two frosh, two sophs, are turning ball over 22% of time, while shooting 27.7% of time, bad combo for team that runs Princeton offense. Big East favorites are 7-6 vs spread away from home; A-14 underdogs are 11-14, 0-1 at home.

Home side won last seven Boston College-Providence games; Eagles lost last three visits here, by 7-4-15 points. Providence is 4-1 after hitting buzzer-beater to nip Belmont at home Wednesday; Friars are using their bench a lot (#22 in bench minutes); they’ve made 47.4% of their 3’s this month. BC is 5-1 vs schedule #332; they got waxed by Texas Tech at Mohegan Sun for their only loss, also their only top 100 opponent. Eagles start two sophs, two juniors. Big East home favorites are 6-5 against the spread; ACC underdogs are 3-4.

Barclays Center, Brooklyn (next two games)
BYU is 3-2 after losing to Alabama by 15 last nite; Cougars lost one of their best G’s Emery, are starting three sophs, two juniors- they used three guys 33:00+ last nite. BYU is #307 experience team playing pace #63, a bad combination. UMass was 5-25 on arc, 4-6 on line in 18-point loss to Minnesota last nite; Minutemen start three juniors, one senior, used only two guys more than 27:00 vs Gophers. UMass is turning ball over 20.8% of time. WCC teams are 7-8 vs spread away from home; A-14 teams are 12-17.

Alabama is 5-0 with four top 150 wins, but they’re 5th-least experienced team in country. Tide is shooting 41.8% behind arc, only 57.4% on foul line- they start two frosh, two sophs, had hands full at home with Tex-Arlington, beating UTA 77-76 Tuesday. Alabama played three guys 30:00+ last nite in fairly easy win. Minnesota is 6-0, winning by 12 at Providence, their only top 100 game so far (schedule #318); Gophers are playing #50 pace in country- they start two juniors, two seniors. Big 14 favorites are 13-7 vs spread away from home; SEC dogs are 4-8.

Monmouth is 2-3 vs schedule #7 in whole country; Hawks’ bench plays 47.4% of their minutes, most in country. Monmouth are #306 experience team that has turned ball over 27% of time so far this month (#348). Hawks start two frosh, one soph. Penn Quakers are 3-3 vs D-I teams, losing both games vs top 160 teams, by 8-4 points. Quakers start two sophs, two juniors- they’re making only 31.7% of 3’s so far. Penn played only eight guys in their last game, a 68-65 win over UMKC. MAAC favorites are 2-3 vs spread; Ivy League underdogs are 5-6.

Iowa State is 3-2 after winning Myrtle Beach tourney last week; Cyclones lost four starters from LY”s team- they lost only home game so far as big favorites to Milwaukee. State starts two seniors, but they’re both 2nd-year seniors. Western Illinois is 2-0 vs D-I teams, winning both games by 2 points- Leathernecks’ bench has played 3rd-least minutes in country. WIU is turning ball over 23.2% of time, but they did allow only 60.5 ppg in the two games. Big X home favorites are 11-5 vs spread; Summit League road underdogs are 8-11.

Murray State lost to Southern Illinois last two years, by 15-4 points- they lost to Salukis in OT last year. Murray is 35-32 since coach Prohm (104-29) bolted to Iowa State; Racers are 1-1 vs D-I teams this year, losing by 5 to Middle Tennessee, beating Wright St. Racers are #84 experience team that doesn’t sub much (#329)- they start two juniors, two seniors. SIU are 1-1 vs D-I teams; they lost by 42 at Louisville Wednesday. Salukis start three juniors, one senior. OVC favorites are 1-6 vs spread; MVC underdogs are 9-4.

Tex-Arlington is 3-1 with only loss 77-76 at Alabama, a game UTA led by 12 in first half; UTA starts five seniors- they’re #1 experience team in country, have made 46.0% of their 3’s this month. Niagara starts three seniors, two juniors- they used two guys 30:00+ last nite, in easy win over Alabama A&M. Purple Eagles are 2-3 vs schedule #51- they won at St Bonaventure, a solid win. Arlington played only one guy more than 27:00 in their win over Western Carolina last night. Sun Belt favorites are 4-4 vs spread; MAAC underdogs are 12-10.

@ Northwest Florida JC (next two games)
Maryland got upset by St Bonaventure last nite; Terps are 5-1 with win over Butler- they’re #309 experience team, starting three sophs, a freshman. Maryland played three guys 33:00+ last nite. New Mexico lost its last three games, allowing 82.7 ppg; Lobos are playing pace #44, forcing turnovers 23.5% of time, but they’re shooting only 43.8% inside arc, low number for team that is #53 experience team in country, and forcing so many TO’s. Big 14 favorites are 13-7 vs spread away from home; Mountain West dogs are 7-4. Lobos were 6-30 on arc in 69-67 loss Friday

TCU is 5-0 after sneaking by New Mexico 69-67 last nite; Horned Frogs start two sophs, two seniors, are #98 experience team in country- this will be their first top 100 game of season tonight. TCU played only two guys more than 27:00 last nite. St Bonaventure had big upset over Maryland last nite; Bonnies played four guys 30:00+ last nite- they start two juniors, one senior. Bonnies are 3-1 with bad home loss to rival Niagara- they’re forcing turnovers 25.4% of time. Big X favorites are 7-9 vs spread away from home; A-14 underdogs are 11-14.
