Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a busy sports Saturday

13) Illinois 20, Penn State 18 OT
— They played nine innings of OT, the longest college game ever.
— Illinois ran ball for 357 yards, outgained Penn State 395-227.
— Illinois was minus-3 in turnovers, threw for only 38 yards.
— Penn State led 10-0 with 3:00 left in first half.

— When was last time a 24-point underdog (that wasn’t a service academy) ran for 350+ yards?
— The college overtime rules are weird; I’ll get into that more this coming week. 

12) Oklahoma 35, Kansas 23:
— Jayhawks led 10-0 at halftime; they were a 38-point underdog.
— Oklahoma didn’t score until there was 7:57 left in third quarter.
— Sooners scored TD with 0:42 left to create misleading final score.
— This was Oklahoma’s first I-A win this year by more than 7 points.

11) Pitt 27, Clemson 17:
— Last 10 years, Clemson was 121-18 SU; they’re 4-3 this year.
— Tigers are scoring only 15.2 ppg against I-A teams.
— QB Uiagalelei was benched after throwing two interceptions.

10) Oregon 34, UCLA 31:
— UCLA led 14-0 in first quarter.
— Oregon converted 7-9 on 3rd down, UCLA 10-19.
— Both teams turned ball over three times.

9) Fresno State 34, Nevada 32:
— Nevada scored TD with 0:02 left; the WR’s foot came down just out of bounds on 2-point play.
— Nevada threw for 476 yards, but lost.
— Wolf Pack WR Doubs caught 19 passes for 203 yards; busy night.

8) Virginia 48, Georgia Tech 40:
— QB Armstrong threw for 396 yards, four TD’s.
— Virginia outgained Tech, 636-570- they were 7-11 on third down
— Tech scored two TD’s in last 1:16 to create misleading final score.

— NIU kicked field goal with 0:54 left for the win.
— Total yardage: NIU 520, CMU 500.

2) Kansas State 25, Texas Tech 24:
— Red Raiders led 14-0 3:29 into the game.
— K-State outscored Tech 15-0 in second half.
— K-State QB Thompson was 24-30/296 passing.

1) Braves 4, Dodgers 2:
— Atlanta wins NLCS, 4-2, goes to first World Series since 1999.
— Braves won NL title despite Ozuna/Acuna playing combined 130 games (40.1% of regular season, none in playoffs).
